Settled circa 1775, Ronceverte, a French word meaning "Greenbrier," was incorporated in 1882. Situated on the gently flowing Greenbrier River, Ronceverte's importance in the growth of Greenbrier County is extraordinary. The commerce and transportation center for the county from the 1870's until the middle half of the 20th century, Ronceverte was home to the largest hardwood producing sawmill in the world from 1880 until 1921. Ronceverte boasts over 51 firsts for the town including the first area hospital, power plant, fire engine, district schools, just to name a few. Ronceverte's historic railroad and lumber heritage is highlighted in the stately 1915 Craftsman Style Train Depot in the heart of town and with Mullican Flooring situated on the original site of the St. Lawrence Boom and Manufacturing Company. Today Ronceverte provides a unique bedroom community, accentuated by friendly people, a quaint historic district, affordable housing, and abundant business opportunities. With the largest municipal park in the county, and access for hiking and biking trails, and river access for canoeing, fishing and boating, Ronceverte offers many opportunities for visitors and welcomes new comers to the Greenbrier Valley.
